Q: Is St. Francis Inn in St. Augustine’s Historic District?
St. Francis Inn is in the heart of the Oldest City's 144 square block Historic District, just three blocks from the central "Plaza de la Constitucion," our nation's oldest public park, established during the city's first Spanish era. The Inn building itself is entrenched in the history of St. Augustine, dating from 1791, the city's second Spanish colonial period. It is one of 29 St. Augustine buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Gaspar Garcia, for whom one of our rooms is named, was the property's first owner, building what now serves as the first two floors of the Main Inn as his home, on the lot granted to him by the King of Spain. It remained as a private residence under subsequent owners, until 1845, when Anna Dummett converted her family's home into a lodging establishment. The Inn's third floor was added in 1888 by owner John L. Wilson, and, directly across St. George Street, he also built what we now call The Wilson House, as a home for his daughter Emily. Four of our rooms and suites are in The Wilson House.
Our Inn buildings sit on the corner of St. Francis Street and the narrow brick-paved St. George Street, just a block from "The Oldest House" and surrounded by other centuries-old homes, churches, and historic sites. The city's many landmarks, including Castillo de San Marcos, the historic city gates (at the opposite end of St. George Street from the Inn), the opulent hotels of the Henry Flagler era, The Cathedral Basilica, and the Government House are all nearby. You can tour the Historic District which surrounds the Inn on foot, on inn bicycles, on segways, by trolley, or from a horse-drawn carriage. Many of our guests experience the area's history by joining guided walking tours, schooner cruises along the bayfront, candlelight processions meandering the old city streets, historic reenactments, and other activities; some of these are bundled in our Specials and Packages. Year round events, festivals, exhibitions, and holiday celebrations highlight the city's rich history, and you can subscribe to our blog or Newsletter to keep up with what's happening. History is alive in St. Augustine and your stay at St. Francis Inn can immerse you in it!
